I am feeling desperate - the pain in my toes and feet is unbearable. I have had a real problem with my right food my toes have spread and clawed, with a huge lump on the soles of my feet.

Over the past two weeks the same has started happening to my right foot and now my ankle joint is swollen and there is no flexible movement at all in my feet and toes. I am having an awful time just walking. I am still in the workplace but it is really hard just to walk accros the office and I can feel my feet swelling in my shoes. I cant wait to get home and put my feet up. Even then they are throbbing.

In desperation I telephoned my rheumy nurse today, she told me that I last saw my c onsltant in August and it will be sometime before I see him again. Also she said that my last xray on my foot did not show fluid around my ankle - that was a year ago! the notes were wrong because they had the wrong foot (she did admit that there was a discrepancy in my notes).

She suggested I wait a while to see if the pain subsides and the swelling goes down. Meanwhile I am here on the settee my feet are absolutely throbbing, in fact my joints are really painful my arms are aching - I have an appointment at my GP surgery tomorrow morning to have my bloods taken hopefully I shall try to see one of the doctors when I am there - so sorry to be such a moaner tonight but feel I am getting nowhere it is so frustrating.

Thanks for listening

Jane

Hi Jane,

Sorry you are in pain at the moment, its awful when it is your feet as you are on them all the time. I had trouble with mine recently and found a gentle foot massage helped no end. You should not have to wait for an appointment to see the RA nurse, thats what they are there for in between the doctors. Just because you did not have problems before doesn't mean you don't now. Hopefully your doctor will be more help. Take care. Lorna x Smile

Hi Jane,

Sorry to hear you are in so much pain, and got no help at all from your rheumy nurse.
Hopefully you'll be able to see a GP tomorrow and then get an emergency appointment with your consultant.
At least you may be able to get some strong painkillers.
Good luck for tomorrow.

Love, Doreen xx

hi Jane,

so sorry to hear how badly your feet are ... i suffer from the waist up apart with RA and from Osteo in my knee's which causes me the most pain.

hope you get some help from your GP,

have to say i would get back on to the Rheumy Nurse if it were me ... we have a weekly flare Clinic if you're in trouble and it sounds to me as though you are being overlooked.

come back and let us know how you got on,

take care

Hi Jane

Just to echo Doreens post, I also feel you need that emergency appointment with the consultant. I am really sorry to hear you are suffering so and trying to hold down a job as well, hope you get that urgent help very soon.

Let us know how things go for you.

Hi Jane,

It`s a shame your rheumy nurse didn`t offer to fix up an earlier appointment for you - there should be a system in place where you can be seen in an emergency.

My toes are heading in various directions now, but I have had a lot of help from the orthotist with custom-made insoles, and a pair of shoes too. Have you been referred for a bio-mechanics assessment on your feet? If not, you need to get back to your rheumy nurse and tell her you want one. Shoes and/or insoles won`t cure your feet, but they should make walking more comfortable for you.

I don`t know which hospital you attend, but where I go the rheumy dept has an "Urgent Clinic," for situations such as yours, when the pain/discomfort is really bad.

Take care,

Kathleen x

Hello Jane,

So sorry to hear that you are in so much pain with your feet. I too get lots of pains
in my feet. My GP has prescribed another pain killer called tramadol and they appear
to help me.

Good luck tomorrow hope you get on well

Hi Jane
So sorry that you are suffering so much, its awful that you cant be seen at the hospital your case certainly sounds urgent! Really hope your GP is more helpful and if you can, take some time off work and just rest with your feet up and regular strong painkillers! Take care and let us know how you get on xx

Agreed to the posts about the rheumy nurse. I'm lucky as heck - I have a great medical team from my GP right up to my consultant. I just got lucky I suppose.

Don't be afraid to demand. Unfortunately in this world those that shout the loudest get the most. In our situation it's very easy to be overlooked. Good luck.

xx
